Prevalence of Dysmenorrhea and its Effects on Academic Performance among higher secondary Students”

Background: Dysmenorrhea is the most common complaint and leading cause of absenteeism in adolescence among university female students. It affects the social, academic and sports activities. Therefore, the objective of the study was to find out the prevalence of dysmenorrhea and its effects on academic performance among higher secondary students.
Methods: Descriptive cross sectional study design was conducted among higher secondary students. Purposive sampling technique was used and the sample size was 206. Data collection was done from January 15th, 2020 to February 12th, 2020. Semi-structure self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics was used to analysis and interpretation of the findings.
Results: This study showed that prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 92.2% whereas, 45.3%, 31% and 23.7 % of the respondents had severe, mild and moderate pain respectively. Likes as, 74.2% respondents had average academic performance. Regarding the class performance, statistical significance was found among severity of pain and faculty absenteeism, class absenteeism, difficulty in remembering and decreased participation (p<0.05). In exam performance, there was also found statistical significance among severity of pain and not able to study for exam, getting low score in exam and having verbal warning from authority (p<0.05). In relation to extra-curricular activities, there was a significant relationship between the severity of pain and lack of interest in sports (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Present study showed a high prevalence of dysmenorrhea. It is a leading cause of recurrent short-term school absence and decreases their academic performance in students.
